Sri Lanka Stays Alive With Win Against Afghanistan

3 min read

At the Gabba, Sri Lanka’s bowlers paved the way for a six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the Twenty20 World Cup, which enabled the hosts to maintain a slim chance of advancing to the semifinals.

With a crisp victory against Afghanistan by six wickets at the Gabba, Sri Lanka has given their T20 World Cup campaign some newfound vigor. Afghanistan was the team that they defeated.

Dhananjaya de Silva, who did not get out while scoring 66 runs off of 42 balls, sealed the outcome by bringing his team to victory with nine balls to spare after the Sri Lankan bowling attack built the foundations for the win. The team needed the victory to keep competing in the competition.

Wanindu Hasaranga, a deceptive spinner, got 3-13, including two wickets in the penultimate over, which contributed to Afghanistan being limited to a score that was below par of 8-144 after they elected to bat first in favorable conditions for scoring runs.

As a result of Sri Lanka’s victory, they have moved up to fourth place in Group 1, and they now need to win their last Super 12 match against England (three points), while simultaneously hoping that either New Zealand (5) or Australia (5) will lose their matches.

The Sri Lankan batters never appeared to be under a great deal of duress while chasing 145, but Dhananjaya masterfully paced the run scoring after the Afghans kept them at 2-63 at the halfway mark.

The graceful right-hander smashed six fours and two sixes to put an end to Afghanistan’s slim chances of making it to the semifinals.

The top order of the Afghan batting lineup got off to a lot of starts during their innings, but the team ultimately paid the price for their inability to continue scoring runs by not reaching the 30-run mark.

Despite only scoring one single in the first over, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Usman Ghani were able to establish a strong foundation by putting up 42 runs together as an opening stand while facing accurate new-ball bowling.

Gurbaz got out for 28 (24 balls) while he was trying to speed up the scoring soon after the power play. He was attempting to knock the bustling paceman Lahiru Kumara (2-30) back over his head.

Ghani went on to make a run-a-ball 27 before holing out to the man-of-the-match Hasaranga. Hasaranga was the one who stopped the run flow in the middle overs for Afghanistan, and as a result, they went seven overs without hitting a boundary.

Hasaranga masterfully stole the game away from the Afghans by taking 2-3 in an outstanding last over, when the Afghans were staring at a score of 160 or higher and still had five overs to bat.

The star leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who seemed to damage his hamstrings at the end of the match, will be the focus of everyone’s attention going forward.
