Dutch Win Dramatic Match Against Namibia

3 min read

The Dutch avoided elimination from the competition after surviving a late scare against Namibia in Geelong. They are currently in the driver’s seat to go to the Super 8s.

Bas de Leede has performed more heroics in order for the Netherlands to escape a late scare and lead them to a five-wicket triumph over Namibia in the Twenty20 World Cup.

After eking out a narrow victory in Geelong on Tuesday, the Dutch have emerged as the only side in Group A that has yet to taste defeat.

They have appeared in the Twenty20 World Cup a total of five times, but this will be only the second time that they make it past the “qualification” stage.

They have a very important encounter against Sri Lanka on Thursday, and the outcome of that match will determine whether or not they finish in the top two and advance to the Super 12 matchups.

Following his performance in Sunday night’s victory against the UAE, in which he took three wickets, de Leede once again excelled against Namibia and was named the match’s most valuable player.

In the second-to-last over, he took the important wickets of Jan Frylinck and skipper Gerhard Erasmus, both of whom were playing for Namibia.

However, his unbeaten 30 off 30 balls proved to be the deciding factor as he and Tim Pringle (8 not out) led the Dutch team to victory with three balls remaining.

When they needed six runs off the last over, de Leede smacked the first delivery from David Wiese for four and then scored the winning runs two balls later. This was a critical shot that helped them win.

After winning the toss, Namibia fell to 3-32 in the sixth over, and they spent the most of their innings playing from a position of disadvantage.

After ten overs, they were only 3-56, but their hero from game one, Frylinck, joined with Stephan Baard (19) and Erasmus (16) in the subsequent overs.

As Namibia scored 31 runs from their final three overs, Frylinck led the team with 43 runs scored off of 48 balls.

With Vikram Singh (39) and Max O’Dowd putting up 59 for the first wicket in 8.2 overs, the Netherlands were in a commanding position to win the match.

When O’Dowd was run out for 35 on the second-to-last ball of the 14th inning, they had reached the score of 1-92.

This prompted a collapse of 4-10 in 18 balls, which suddenly put the Dutch in a difficult position at 5-101 in the 16th over. However, de Leede and Pringle collaborated to stave off the Namibian comeback with their efforts.

After pulling off a remarkable shock over Sri Lanka on Sunday, Namibia now faces an uphill battle against the UAE on Thursday night. If they want to advance to the Super 12 stage, they will need to win.
